CLIMATE N’ CULTURE CAMPAIGN

Movement Building at the Intersection of Climate N’ Culture

This national campaign provides our target demographic with accessible opportunities to unite and deepen their shared understanding of the critical climate issues facing frontline communities.

These events correspond with larger environmental convenings like New York Climate Week and non-climate-related cultural convenings like Essence Fest. This campaign works to invite more people into the climate movement by reorienting the climate change narrative toward radical imagination, climate optimism, and environmental justice to keep our communities rooted in hope for the future.

As we do, we’re reminded that hope is earned through action, it takes collective action to change systems, and real change only happens when everyone is part of the solution.

CLIMATE N’ CULTURE EVENT SPOTLIGHTS

Something in the Water Festival: Bridging the gap between music and climate, Black Girl Environmentalist cultivated a year-long partnership with Support + Feed and Pharell's Something in the Water Festival to facilitate community conversations around food security, climate resiliency, and culture in the Virginia Beach area. Community conversations included panels with local environmental activists, celebrities, and restaurant owners that connected the dots between climate resilience, plant-based food, and culture.

The Aunties Film Screening Tour: We hosted a multi-city screening tour to celebrate the release of the film “The Aunties: From the North Star to the Poplar,” a climate documentary that shares the story and lived experiences of Black land stewards and culture bearers Donna Dear and Paulette Greene. Our film screenings featured intimate intergenerational conversations with the Aunties around the legacy of Black kinship with the land, the importance of “Auntying” as a crucial pillar in our communities, and the ease that comes with radical love.

NY & LA Climate Weeks: Some of our most prominent national events occurred at Climate Weeks, with tens of thousands of climate leaders, corporations, and organizers. During New York Climate Week (NYCW) 2023, we hosted a Black Woman in Climate panel and mixer at the Free Black Women Library. During NYCW 2024, we hosted four events including a Climate Women Mixer in partnership with Rebundle. BGE was also active in the first-ever Los Angeles Climate Week (LACW) through three events.
